On 12/14/17 at approximately 6:17 a.m., The Kern County Fire Department received a call for a fire in an abandoned apartment. The report originally came in from a Kern County Sheriff Deputy with other reports quickly coming in from nearby residents.

First on scene crews were faced with heavy smoke that had filled the inside of the structure and flames coming from a bed room on the south end of the apartment. Firefighters were forced to use a chainsaw to make entry, due to all of the doors and windows being secured with plywood. With heavy smoke coming from the structure, initial crews made an aggressive attack while searching for possible victims. During the primary search a victim was found and pulled from the burning structure. Firefighters immediately began emergency medical care (CPR) in attempt to save the victim. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital.
