Taft, CA

At approximately 2:00 a.m. the Kern County Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in 500 block of Van Buren Street. Upon arrival units were faced with one structure 100% involved and an exposure to the south 10% involved. Crews made an aggressive attack on the fire while confirming that all occupants were out of the structures. Firefighters were able to protect the exposure resulting in only about $10,000 damage, however the main structure was a total loss of $90,000. Causes are under investigation. No injuries to firefighters. Prior to the first engine’s arrival, the homeowner was awoken by sounding smoke detectors. He was able to assist his son in exiting the structure through a window to safety. Then he to had to exit the structure through the window due to heavy heat and smoke conditions. Both received minor cuts from jagged window glass and were treated at the scene by Hall ambulance. Two other family members were able to exit through the rear door of the home to safety without injury.
