Cranebreak, CA
At 6:29 pm, the Kern County Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure on fire in Canebreak, east of Onyx. The first arriving engine crew was faced with a single wide trailer and an approximately 500 square foot additional structure that was fully involved in fire. Two occupants were home at the time and made it out of the home safely along with two of their dogs, but did have four cats and two dogs perish in the fire. Due to the remote area of the residence, crews were faced with limited fire water. Additional fire engines and a water tender had to be ordered to set up a tanker shuttle to provide adequate water in a timely manner for full extinguishment of the fire. Although the fire resulted in a total loss to the structure, firefighters were able to protect a nearby travel trailer.
The cause of the fire is unknown, and Red Cross was called to provide assistance to the home owners.
