Mettler, CA

Around 3:30 AM the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a 24’ box trailer semi-truck on fire just south of Grapevine Road on south bound I-5.  First arriving crews found the vehicle fully involved and fire spreading to the grass on the west side of I-5 and spotting to the center divider. A first alarm wildland response was started to fight the vegetation fire which was 10-15 acres. A structure protection task force was also started to prevent the fire from threatening homes in Digier Canyon. Coordinated efforts by air and ground resources kept the fire to 60 acres and no homes were threatened. Two lanes of south bound I-5 are currently closed but expected to open soon.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind residents to make sure they maintain the required defensible space around their home.

Evacuations:  None - No immediate threat to homes

Closures: 2 lanes of south bound I-5

Assisting Agencies: CHP and Cal Trans
