Keene, CA

At 11:55 AM, the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls for a grass fire on the north side of Highway 58, west of Keene.  Helicopter 408, stationed at Keene Helibase, was only a 3-minute flight away and was the first unit on scene.  The Helicopter Foreman reported that the fire had already consumed several acres of grass.  Helicopter 408 was able to make water drops on the fire and then direct ground resources to the critical area of the advancing flames.  An aggressive attack from the combination of fire engines, bulldozers, helicopters, air tankers, and hand crews were used to contain the fire quickly.  Forward progress of the fire was stopped at 2:30 PM—estimated at 50 acres.  Firefighters will remain on scene to mop up remaining hot spots and secure the perimeter.

Fire Investigators were called to the scene.  Fire cause is under investigation.
