Bakersfield,  CA

At 1:27 PM, the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls for a grass fire on the north side of the river, west of Riverview park in Oildale. When fire crews first arrived on scene they were faced with a grass fire with extremely high winds blowing north pushing the fire in the direction of horse stables, numerous parked vehicles and homes on Willow Drive.  Firefighters worked diligently to protect as many animals and homes as possible. Crews were able to open gates allowing horses to be freed from danger, as well as pulling hose lines to protect as many structures as possible.  Helicopter 408 dropped water on the fire—saving structures and animals.   Due to high winds pushing the fire, approximately 40 vehicles were destroyed, 3 homes were burned and 5 horses perished in the fire. Forward progress of the fire has been stopped and firefighters were able to get full containment of the fire.

Firefighting efforts were made difficult because of high winds, arcing power lines, and limited resources due to multiple fires in the Bakersfield area.  Fire Investigators were called to the scene and found no evidence that the fire was intentionally set.

Evacuations: Residents were temporarily evacuated from several homes on Willow Drive

Road Closures: Willow Drive between South Oildale Drive and Hickerson Drive
