Oildale,  CA

At approximately 4:00 pm, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire located at the 100 block of Woodrow Avenue.  Engine 63 arrived on scene to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the west and north side of a house. Crews immediately went interior to fight the fire and search for occupants, but soon had to retreat due to the roof being compromised and eventually collapsing. Nobody was found during the interior search.  The Incident Commander made the decision to fight the fire defensively and focus on protecting nearby homes.  The residence to the west was saved and suffered only minor damage.  Approximately 30 firefighters were on scene.  The house is a total loss and fire cause is under investigation.  This is the second time in about a month that firefighters have fought a structure fire at this address.

Shortly after 4:00apm, while nearly arriving to the structure fire on Woodrow Avenue, KCFD Battalion 6 spotted smoke several blocks to the northwest.  He located a dumpster fire that was next to a 2-story apartment building on Norris Road and Howard Avenue.  The building was catching fire and the Battalion Chief requested a reinforced alarm and immediately started to evacuate the 4-unit structure.  Firefighters arrived on scene and were able to stop the fire before it spread through the common attic.  One unit sustained moderate damage and the other three apartments were saved.  The fire is under investigation, no injuries.
