At 9:54 PM Wednesday, a reinforced structure fire alarm was dispatched to the 400-block of Roberts Lane for multiple reports of an apartment on fire. The first engine crew on scene attacked the fire and also alerted residents of the other six units of the building. Additional crews were used to search for occupants and make sure the fire did not spread. Firefighters were able to confine the fire to a bedroom and bathroom in one unit. Three people were displaced by the fire and requested assistance from Red Cross.
Damage is estimated at $40,000. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters. Several dogs and cats were rescued by firefighters, however one dog died in the fire. The residents of the other apartments in the building were able to return inside their homes after careful inspections were performed by the building department and utility companies. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind residents to make sure that they have working smoke detectors installed in their home.
