Shafter,  CA

Just after 2:00 PM this afternoon, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a natural gas leak at an apartment complex in the 200 block of West Tulare Ave. Crews found that an 1-1/2 inch natural gas line had been ruptured by a contractor who had been on site to repair the main water line for the 60 unit apartment complex. Fire crews, along with Shafter police, isolated the area and began doing precautionary evacuations of the entire complex until Southern California Gas could arrive on scene to secure the leak and make the necessary repair. In total, 60 people were evacuated. Firefighters remained on scene as a precaution until the leak was controlled. Evacuation orders have been lifted.

Evacuations:  All apartments in the immediate vicinity

Road Closures:  All roads surrounding the apartment complex were shut down as a precaution until the leak could be repaired.

Assisting Agencies:  Shafter Police Department, County Roads, Southern California Gas Company

Additional Information:  The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind the community to call 811 before digging. In addition, when gas lines have been marked by the Utility company, the gas line should be identified visually before using machinery in close proximity.
