At approximately 12:45 AM the Kern County Fire Department received multiple calls for a structure fire with smoke and flames showing in the 3200 block of Monterey Street in east Bakersfield. Due to reports, a reinforced structure response was started. Crews arrived on scene to a single story home about 40% involved in fire with exposures on both sides of the home. The first on scene units had reports of occupants still in the structure. Crews made their way into the home and were able to find a victim lying on the floor. Firefighters were able to pull the victim from the house for transport to a local hospital. Four occupants were home at the time of the fire, while three were able to escape with minor injuries, one had major injuries and would later succumb to those injuries at the hospital. Firefighters continued to aggressively fight the fire and were able to contain the fire to the home of origin. Cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries to firefighters as a result of this fire.
Additional Information: It is unknown if this home had any working smoke detectors. The KCFD would like to remind all home owners to assure you have working smoke detectors in your home. Early notification of fire can save lives.
